Much of Hugo's poetry seems well suited to a modern audience, in spite of or because of its romantic features; meaningful and moving to readers of English whatever its French aspects; and more accessible, on the whole, than the poetry of Rimbaud, Mallarme and Valery - all of whom owe a great deal to Hugo.
